Three entry categories:

  • Portrait: Welcomes individual, group, and self-portraits

Eligibility

Open to photographers worldwide aged 18 or over. Photographers under 18 may enter through parents or guardians. Photographs must be original works created and owned by the entrant; images may have been taken at any time and previously entered elsewhere. Fully AI-generated images are prohibited; original RAW files or film may be requested.

Entry Fee

Early Bird (until July 20, 2026):

  • General entrants: AUD$30 per image
  • Head On Festival Friends: AUD$25 per image
  • Photographers under 25: AUD$15 per image

Standard (from July 21, 2026):

  • General entrants: AUD$35 per image
  • Photographers under 25: AUD$17.50 per image
  • Festival Friends: AUD$25 per image

Prizes/Awards

  • Three Category Winners (1 per category, 3 total): AUD$5,000 cash + premium OM System camera kit + Photobook Australia printing package + premium magazine subscriptions each
  • Two Runners-up per category (6 total): Photobook Australia printing package + premium magazine subscriptions each
  • 110 Finalists: Included at no additional cost in professionally produced printed and online exhibitions at Head On Photo Festival 2026, plus inclusion in a hardcover catalogue
  • 200 Semi-finalists: Presented in a digital exhibition
  • Judged anonymously — photographs are assessed on creative and technical merit, not on the entrant's identity, experience, equipment, or professional profile

Head On Photo Awards is an international photography competition presented by the non-profit Head On Foundation, showcased during the Head On Photo Festival in Sydney, Australia. The awards are distinguished by their fully anonymous judging process — photographs are assessed solely on creative and technical merit, with no consideration given to the entrant's identity, experience, equipment, or professional background.
